Transport security utility for modeling IPsec ESP and AH per-packet overhead across cipher suites (AES-GCM, AES-CBC, ChaCha20-Poly1305), enabling accurate backhaul capacity planning.
IPsec/TLS overhead calculators quantify cryptographic header bytes and MTU impact so encrypted telecom interconnects avoid silent fragmentation of GTP-U and signaling traffic.
The calculator builds the exact byte-level ESP encapsulation for the chosen cipher suite, accounting for fixed and variable-length fields (IV, padding, ICV), then expresses overhead as a percentage of payload.
Built on 3GPP Technical Specifications, ensuring accuracy for production deployments and security audits.
Calculations specifically designed to identify protocol vulnerabilities and signaling misconfigurations.
Mandatory for 3GPP Rel-15+ compliant RAN backhaul (TS 33.210 / TS 33.501 SecGW). Prevents over- or under-sizing of IPsec-secured transport links between eNBs/gNBs and SeGW.

1500-byte Ethernet MTU minus ~73 bytes ESP/NAT-T overhead → ~1427 byte IP payload budget before inner GTP-U headers. Inner tunnels must be planned inside that budget.
Exact sizes vary by vendor AEAD implementation and padding. Confirm with show commands or pcaps on the chosen platform.
Typical ESP tunnel mode with SHA-256 and AES-GCM can add on the order of 50–80+ bytes depending on mode, UDP encapsulation (NAT-T), and cipher. Always recompute path MTU for GTP-U or Diameter over IPsec rather than assuming 1500-byte Ethernet end-to-end.
If any NAT sits between peers, UDP encapsulation (port 4500) is required. NAT-T adds UDP headers on top of ESP and further reduces effective MTU.
User-plane tunnels often stack IP/UDP/GTP and then IPsec. Sum both calculators before setting transport MTU and fragmentation policy.
